Six New Strains of E. Coli Render Some Beef Products Unsellable
September 13, 2011 - The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that it is taking new steps E. coli and protect the safety of the American food supply. Six additional serogroups of pathogenic E. coli will be declared adulterants in non-intact raw beef. If the E. coli serogroups O26, O103, O45, O111, O121 and O145 are found in raw ground beef or its precursors, those products will be prohibited from entering commerce. Like E.coli O157:H7, these serogroups can cause severe illness and even death, and young children and the elderly are at highest risk. The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service will begin testing for these six serogroups and enforcing the new policy on March 5, 2012.

Arkansas Firm Recalls Ground Turkey Products Due to Possible Salmonella Contamination (September 11, 2011) Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation, of Springdale, Arkansas, is recalling approximately 185,000 pounds of ground turkey products that may be contaminated with a strain of Salmonella Heidelberg that is identical to that of an outbreak of Salmonellosis that resulted in an August 3, 2011 recall of ground turkey products.

Dolls Recalled by Pottery Barn Kids Due to Strangulation Hazard (September 8, 2011) - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada, in cooperation with Pottery Barn Kids, a division of Williams-Sonoma Inc., of San Francisco, California, today announced a voluntary recall of Chloe, Sophie and Audrey soft dolls. The hair on the Chloe and Sophie dolls loops can pose a strangulation hazard. The recall involves approximately 81,000 in the United one report in which a loop of the Chloe doll’s hair was found around the neck of a 21-month old child. The child was not injured.
Nine Manufacturers, Distributors Announce Consumer Recall of Pourable Gel Fuel Due to Burn and Flash Fire Hazards (September 1, 2011) - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with nine manufacturers and distributors, is announcing a voluntary recall of all pourable gel fuels made or sold by these companies. The recall involves an estimated 2 million units of various pourable gel fuels packaged in one-quart plastic bottles and one-gallon plastic jugs and sold in scented and non-scented formulations, which were sold since 2008 for between $5 and $20.
