Garry DeBoer, CASL, RHU, LUTCF
Senior Client Executive
Even when Garry DeBoer is walking around The Horton Group's office, there is still a good chance that he is talking to a customer on his headset. “When a customer needs something, I want to be there to assist,” said Garry. “My portable headset is just one way that I provide additional value.”
As Senior Client Executive for Horton Benefits Surety Services, Garry provides value to his customers and to the Horton Group by being an expert in individual insurance options and procedures. “I work with newly-hired employees, individuals leaving their places of employment and those with unique insurance situations,” shared Garry. “Anything from Medicare and COBRA to dependent eligibility and long-term care fits into my wheelhouse.”
When asked his priorities while working with clients, Garry said, “Since health insurance can often seem a bit foreign to those outside of the industry, I try to keep things as simple as possible while still providing enough information for customers to make educated choices about their health care. I also understand that teaching my customers is an ongoing process, so I work to educate during each conversation, while not overwhelming anyone with information.”
While Garry does not pursue a specific niche segment of the industry, he finds that more of his time is dedicated to Medicare than any other area. “I make sure to stay abreast relative to new Medicare legislation and issues. Customers appreciate that I understand their issues and am able to explain solutions in a way that makes sense to them.” As part of his goal to remain current, Garry has obtained the Certified Advisor for Senior Living (CASL) designation.
Garry's expertise within the insurance industry dates back more than 25 years. In 1983, he worked as a captive multi-line agent for an Illinois-based insurance carrier. In 1999, he joined the insurance division of Citizens Financial Bank in Munster, Indiana. When The Horton Group purchased Citizens Financial Bank's insurance operations in 2002, Garry joined the Horton team. “Since joining Horton, I have focused on providing customers with excellent service while incorporating the latest technology into my efforts. We provide full-service to groups and individuals for health, life, disability, Medicare and long-term care coverage.”
When asked the most rewarding part of his job, Garry shared, “I enjoy helping people find solutions. Many times when we receive calls from new individuals, they are frustrated with their current health care system. We are able to assist them through advice and counseling, allowing them to reach their goals in a way that makes sense to them.”
Garry was born in Minnesota, but has lived most of his life in the south suburbs of Chicago. He and his wife of nearly 37 years, Darlene, enjoy their "empty nest” time by taking vacations to the Caribbean and the Riviera Maya in Mexico. Garry is an active member of Crossroads Community Church, volunteering at least once a month for a town in Kankakee County. More than anything, Garry enjoys spending his free time with his three grandsons.
