John Naso, AFSB
In 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, including the landmark 9.7-acre roof of The Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans. The industrial roofing company that constructed the original dome was contracted to repair the damage. John Naso, Vice President of Horton Surety Services, was asked by the roofing company to find a carrier who would write the multi-million dollar bond needed for the project.
“It took two exhausting weeks and countless phone calls, but I found a specialty carrier to write the Superdome bond,” John said. “It was just a matter of going the extra mile for a client. Someone else might have told them the job could not be bonded.”
John, who specializes in complex and high capacity contract surety programs, has been underwriting bonds for nearly 30 years. Working for Horton since 1992, John deals exclusively with A- or higher bond carriers. His expertise and reputation throughout the industry afford Horton surety clients a distinct competitive advantage. “We created and administer one of the only pre-executed license bond programs in the country,” John explained. “This saves considerable time and money for a number of Horton clients.”
Compliance and legitimacy are a top priority of Horton's surety division. John makes certain that his team meet the various state licensing requirements. And while placing certain types of bonds can be a long, paper intensive process, he finds the job challenging for another reason.
“I have a lot of practice delivering tough news,” John said. “But that is just a reality with bonds. Holding conversations regarding sensitive financial issues can be hard. You have to be tactful.”
John has underwritten thousands of bonds for thousands of situations, yet says his job never gets old.
“I'm always learning,” John concluded. “And I'm always finding a solution for my clients, which I enjoy.”

Lucky Money, Inc. is a family-owned company based in San Francisco, California. In an attempt to obtain a Money Transmitter bond for our Saipan operation, we contacted several brokers. We were looking for an insurance broker who could provide us with fast turnaround time and had a strong commitment to customer service. The Horton Group delivered and was able to place a bond for our Saipan operation, and now handles all of our bonds – including our international bond needs in Guam. By moving our bond program to The Horton Group, the overall service to our company has vastly improved, plus our costs for the program were reduced.
