Paul Shaheen, RHU, REBC
You will never see Paul Shaheen dragging his feet. For over 15 years, Paul has been one of The Horton Group's busiest brokers. An employee benefits specialist focused on niche markets, Paul sees great value in his client concentration.
"There is a real benefit when you know the specific issues facing an industry and can speak their language," said Paul. "Although my client base features businesses of all kinds, my main focus is providing employee health benefits for law practices. This can be a real challenge because attorneys often place a premium on the strength of their firm's benefit plan."
Paul has an intimate history with law. He clerked at his father's firm outside of Detroit and probated at a firm in Ann Arbor during his years at the University of Michigan. An avid hockey fan, Paul had an unusual reason for liking Hall-of-Fame goalie Ken Dryden growing up.
“I?loved Dryden for not only his incredible goaltending skills and all the Stanley Cups he won, but also because he left the NHL?to pursue his law degree,” Paul said. Paul feels that being a part of The Horton Group allows him to provide the level of service clients deserve.
"All brokers say they will be available to business owners and their human resources team to assist with claims advocacy or help facilitate a proactive wellness program," Paul explained. "But after talking with a number of clients who moved their business to Horton, I found that our larger competitors have a hard time delivering these services - especially if the client isn't a Fortune 500 company.?Horton has always been a friend to small and mid-size companies."
Paul argues that proactive communication is critical to a benefit plans' success. He and his team are in constant contact with clients, including the production of a prescription drug newsletter called The Daily Prescription. Always looking towards the future, Paul believes his best moments at Horton are yet to come.
"As for life outside of insurance, my wife and I love the experience of raising our three children," Paul concluded. "I stay busy reporting for various hockey publications and also remain active in my church and community."

We demand far more than just the lowest price for our employee health benefits program. Although it may sound cliche, our employees are our greatest asset and we want to take care of them. Paul and his team fully understand our needs and have designed health benefit programs that please both our employees and our CFO.

In 2005, at Paul Shaheen’s suggestion, Illco held our first health fair. Paul took time out of his weekend to attend the event and answer any insurance questions our employees had. We had great participation and terrific feedback, in no small part because of Paul’s efforts.

I have recommended Paul Shaheen and The Horton Group to many of my Human Resource and Chief Financial Officer peers and will continue to do so without hesitation.
