Enforcement of OSHA’s crystalline silica standard will begin on Sept. 23, 2017.
Employers in the construction industry need to either comply with the new permissible exposure limit or implement specific dust controls for certain operations as provided in Table 1 of the standard.
To help employers comply with the standard, OSHA has released a Small Entity Compliance Guide that describes the steps employers are required to take in easy-to-understand language. Employers should use the guide now to ensure that they’re prepared for the transition.
OSHA estimates that more than 900 new cases of silicosis will be prevented each year, and more than 600 lives will be saved once the effects of the standard are realized.
