Facts:

  • Everyone feels the effects on their bodies following hard work, work around the house, or sporting activities.
  • Muscle fatigue, sprains, and strains are unfortunate, but there are things we can do to help minimize the effects and associated discomfort.
  • Many workers are referred to as “Industrial Athletes”, and for good reason. This is a fitting description for the work many people do for a living.
  • Fortunately, most sprains and strains are 100% “curable” through rest and rehabilitation, as most involve muscle or other “connective” type tissues that will eventually heal.
Preventing Sprains and Strains:
  • The “Industrial Athlete” is a worker that is well-conditioned and whose muscles are well “trained” with respect to their bodies regularly doing the job.
  • Proper stretching BEFORE work can also help prevent “cold” muscles and connective tissue from being injured. Nearly EVERY professional athlete warms up through stretching prior to competition.
  • Muscles are engines that perform work, but engines require fuel. Proper diet can help make muscles last long enough to prevent fatigue and sprains and strains. Diets rich in protein provide muscles the highest octane fuel.
  • Another important source of fuel is water. Without water, the body cannot properly regulate temperature, and hydration is critical in avoiding muscle fatigue and breakdown.
  • Jobs do not cause sprains and strains … people do! You are in the best position to avoid sprains and strains by preparing your body for your job and following safety practices including safe lifting and material handling methods.
