Over the past 20+ years, the Minnesota Self-Insured and Stop Loss marketplace has been dominated by Insurance Carriers in a purely ‘bundled’ approach, not allowing their customers to purchase outside stop-loss or pharmacy services.  This approach gave little control to employers and put the insurance carriers in the driver’s seat when it came to pricing, negotiation leverage and underwriting positioning.

Over the past year, like many regions in the country, the Minnesota market has evolved with additional products and options that take an ‘unbundled’ approach, allowing employers to purchase their administrative services, stop loss coverage and pharmacy services from specific vendors of their choosing – allowing employers to have more flexibility and control, while at the same time providing the same networks, formularies and other options that their employees are used to.  “Unbundled” programs allow employers to shop multiple stop loss options and additionally share in some or even all of the prescription drug rebates that their insurance carrier and pharmacy benefit managers have been keeping on their financials in the ‘bundled’ approach.
