Summer is the perfect time for family vacations as kids are out of school, and parents need a break from work. Traveling allows children to explore new places, meet new people, and have unique experiences. However, traveling can also cause anxiety in kids due to unfamiliar surroundings, sleeping in different beds, and trying new foods. To help minimize your child’s anxiety while traveling, the American Psychiatric Association suggests the following tips:

  1. Involve your children in planning the vacation if they are old enough. This will help them learn about the destination and how they will get there.
  2. Allow plenty of time to reach your destination to avoid rushing or getting stuck in traffic.
  3. Bring snacks, books, games, and other entertainment to keep kids occupied during long road trips.
  4. Establish a routine while traveling to provide a sense of predictability and reassurance to children.
  5. Allow your child to bring something familiar from home, such as a favorite toy or blanket, to provide comfort.
  6. Plan for frequent bathroom and snack breaks to keep your child comfortable.
  7. Let your child stay in touch with friends and family back home via phone calls, emails, or postcards.
  8. Avoid adult-oriented activities and instead plan child-friendly activities like visiting parks, zoos, or toy stores.

Additionally, the AAA recommends the following tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable road trip:

  1. Buckle up for safety to reduce injuries in case of an accident.
  2. Get a good night’s sleep before embarking on a long drive to avoid drowsy driving.
  3. Take a break from driving or switch drivers if you feel sleepy.
  4. Never drink and drive, which puts everyone at risk.
  5. Conduct a pre-road trip checklist on your vehicle to avoid future breakdowns and ensure a smooth ride.

By following these tips, you can help minimize your child’s anxiety and ensure a safe and enjoyable family vacation.
