John Schulte is a Vice President for Horton’s Employee Benefit Solutions Division. He provides Horton clients with comprehensive, cost-effective and innovative solutions to meet their most complex Employee Benefits challenges and opportunities.

John brings over 10 years of insurance experience to The Horton Group. As a former underwriter, he has a unique and comprehensive understanding of how to leverage carriers and products on behalf of his clients.

“Starting my insurance career on the carrier side gave me the knowledge base to effectively leverage and negotiate with carriers,” John says. “I also like to keep a pulse on the market and the constantly-upgrading technology. Understanding emerging trends and their pros and cons helps my clients manage their spend and find efficiencies.”

Being a Benefits broker boils down to three things for John: Saving people money with creative strategies, minimizing headaches by implementing efficiencies, and aligning Benefits programs with people’s goals and expectations for their employees.

“If they want to be an employer of choice, we’ll review benchmarking data,” John says. “If they are tired of getting a 12% increase every year, we’ll review alternative funding programs. There are so many levers to pull; the key is making sure they are educated on all the options so you can pull the right lever.”

John recognizes that the insurance industry offers the opportunity to help people. “It’s a rewarding experience because I get a ton of gratitude from helping people achieve their goals,” he reflects. “Being an effective insurance broker really comes down to one thing: caring about your clients and prospects.”

John lives with his wife, Jenelle, and their golden retriever, Tater, in Wicker Park, Chicago. Many of his clients and colleagues will be surprised to know that he was the first American ever to play in La Primera Divisió handball league in Barcelona, Spain. When he’s not in the office, you can find John on the golf course or playing in the Papa Hops 16″ Softball Tournament. He also serves as a board member for the Greater Organization for the Less Fortunate (G.O.L.F.).
