You will never see Paul Shaheen dragging his feet. For nearly 35 years, Paul has been one of The Horton Group’s busiest and most accomplished brokers, with a principal focus on providing group and individual benefit solutions for law firms and law professionals, as well as offering insurance expertise to the nonprofit, architectural, manufacturing, construction and automotive industries.

To that end, Paul sees great value in client concentration.

“There is a real benefit to knowing the specific issues facing an industry,” Paul said. “Knowing your client’s particular field allows you to help them achieve a higher level of performance. This is especially true for law firms, which place such a premium on quality benefits to find and retain top talent.”

While Paul and his team work with law firms and companies of all sizes, he feels Horton’s greatest strength is working with small to mid-sized groups.

“All brokers say they will be available to business owners and their human resources team to assist with claims advocacy or help facilitate a proactive wellness program,” Paul said. “However, after talking with several clients who moved their business to Horton, I’ve found that our larger competitors are more challenged to deliver these services quickly and consistently.

In my opinion, no other agency consistently deploys the level of talent and services as we do for small to mid-sized companies.”

As for the legal profession, Paul’s history runs deep. He clerked at his father’s law firm (Shaheen Jacobs & Ross) in his native Detroit for many years before, during and after attending the University of Michigan. His passion lies not only in managing group benefits but, even more so, helping legal professionals and their families with life insurance, disability, long-term care and overseas travel coverages.

“COVID-19 brought families together and had them thinking about their future and overall finances like never before,” Paul observed. “I take great pride in ensuring people and their families stay healthy and have the proper protection they need at all times.”

Beyond providing group and individual benefits for law firms, Paul has further embedded himself in the legal community through his involvement in several legal organizations, such as the Association of Legal Administrators, The Women’s Bar Association of Illinois, The Chicago Bar Foundation, as well as being a Bronze Fellow with the Illinois Bar Foundation.

In addition to serving as a benefits consultant, Paul has furthered his work inside the agency as co-chair of Horton’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee, focusing on listening and awareness.

“Our activities and presentations have given our employees a meaningful platform to share their stories in a safe and non-judgmental space that has been incredibly powerful,” Paul reflected. “By being good listeners and letting people know they’re not alone, we feel our culture has improved, and we’re a more successful company for our efforts. We listen, we hear, and we act.”

Outside of Horton, Paul resides in Orland Park, Illinois, with his significant other (Joni) and their dogs, Charlie and Skai. He is the proud father of three beautiful daughters (Helena, Jenna and Elisa). A hockey player in his youth, Paul’s lifelong love of the game eventually drew him to the radio/tv broadcast booth. He continues that passion even today as a freelance writer and contributor to NHL Network Radio (Sirius/XM Channel 91).

Additionally, Paul happily sings with the Men Of Spirito! choir, and enjoys golf, reading and traveling.
