Millennials’ Confusion Challenges Hospital Billing

The first generation to come of age under the Affordable Care Act has had difficulty navigating the rules of consumer-driven health care.

According to a recent Transunion report, more than half of millennials say they have little to no understanding of how out-of-pocket health costs work, including copays, deductibles, and coinsurance. 

Nearly 3 in 4 millennial patients—those born between 1980 and 1994—fail to pay their medical bills when first billed. In order to help millennials understand and pay their bills, hospitals are starting to change their billing methods, including transitioning from paper billing to online billing. They’re also trying to prepare patients by explaining their out-of-pocket costs ahead of treatment and working out flexible payment plans.
