The World Organization for Animal Health recently warned poultry farmers in Europe of a new outbreak of avian flu. And, although no cases have been detected in the United States, the agency also stated that the disease could easily spread abroad.
The strain that was recently detected was the H5N8 strain—the same one that killed over 40 million turkeys and chickens in the United States in 2014. However, it’s possible that since then the strain has picked up more genes from wild birds, which could make it even more dangerous.
