Alex Hayes is the Tax Insurance Practice Group Leader for Horton’s Risk Advisory Solutions department. He specializes in providing innovative and timely tax insurance solutions for renewable energy projects and various transactional and non-transactional tax risks.

With over 30 years of tax experience, Alex Hayes brings a deep understanding and substantial expertise to Horton regarding conducting training sessions for numerous tax and M&A advisors. Alex entered the tax insurance business in 2023, but before that, he provided sophisticated M&A and international tax services in industry and consulting roles. Most recently, he was a Tax Partner with SoftBank Group, working on major transactions, including the Sprint/T-Mobile merger, which closed in 2020. Before his SoftBank role, Alex was a Director at Deloitte Tax LLP, advising corporate clients on cross-border M&A, global expansion and restructurings.

“Massive demand for tax insurance has followed the explosion in renewable energy projects made possible through the Inflation Reduction Act, as well as the increasingly complex tax landscape our clients face during transactions or as part of their regular business,” Alex says. “For tax insurance especially, the market is still in its infancy. There is a lot of growth ahead.”

When engaging with clients, Alex is committed to providing tailored solutions that meet their specific needs. He wants his clients to feel that their requirements are his top priority. As the tax rules and the tax insurance industry continue to evolve, he believes that innovation and creativity are key to delivering the best results for clients. His clients often praise his creative and thoughtful approach to his work.

Alex finds the most rewarding aspect of his position at The Horton Group is working with a great team to solve client problems. He always says never to assume something can’t be done just because no one else has done it.

An interesting fact about Alex that isn’t apparent from his bio, resume, or LinkedIn profile is that he once built a large tax model in Excel that took two hours to compute.

Alex lives in San Jose, California, with his wife, Kristy. They have two daughters, Miranda and Kristy. When he’s not working, you will probably find him in front of the BBQ or traveling with his family.
