Construction Sector May Be Running Out of Workers to Hire

Thirty-nine states reported year-on-year gains in construction hiring from May 2015 to May 2016, but only 19 states reported month-on-month gains from April to May of this year, according to the Associated General Contractors of America.

The numbers reflect a longstanding trend in the construction industry. While demand for construction continues to grow, the pool of skilled construction labor hasn’t grown to keep pace, resulting in labor shortages.

Industry stakeholders believe that the trend could have broad economic impacts, and they have urged policymakers to invest in skills-based training to help build out the construction workforce.
