Norsk Hydro, a leading aluminum manufacturer, recently announced that a large-scale ransomware attack forced the company to suspend operations at many of its worksites. Not only did the attack disrupt the manufacturer’s website, but hackers were also able to disable equipment used for smelting operations.
The ransomware attack affected Norsk Hydro facilities across the world, including the United States, Norway, Qatar and Brazil. And, while employees have started to continue work by switching from automated to manual systems, they’ve been asked not to connect any devices to company networks.
Many manufacturers rely on networks and other interconnected systems to conduct their normal operations, but this latest incident shows the physical risks of cyber attacks.
